Here is what you need:
– 6 tablespoons butter
– 4 large yellow onions
– 1 tablespoon sugar
– 2 cloves garlic
– ½ cup cooking sherry
– 7 cups reduced-sodium beef broth
– 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
– ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
– 1 bay leaf
In addition to the above ingredients, be sure to have sliced french bread and a variety of cheeses to put on top. Shredded Gruyere, elemental, Parmesan and mozzarella make a delicious combination.

Once the garlic has cooked for a minute, it’s time to add the sherry. This is the final step you need to supervise, the rest of the magic will happen in the slow cooker!
