Maggie Smith was born on December 28, 1934 in the English city of Ilford. She is the daughter of Margaret Hutton and Nathaniel Smith, a pathologist from the University of Oxford. Alistair and Ian, her two older twin brothers, were her older siblings.
She attended Oxford High School until she was sixteen when she transferred to the Oxford Playhouse School to act.
