Maggie Smith is a well-known British actress who has appeared on stage, screen and television. She has appeared in over 50 films and has established herself as one of the most celebrated European actresses in the world with a career spanning over 60 years.

Margaret Natalie Smith, better known as Maggie Smith, is a British actress.


Maggie Smith was born on December 28, 1934 in the English city of Ilford. She is the daughter of Margaret Hutton and Nathaniel Smith, a pathologist from the University of Oxford. Alistair and Ian, her two older twin brothers, were her older siblings.

She attended Oxford High School until she was sixteen when she transferred to the Oxford Playhouse School to act.

She made her professional debut in 1952 in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Film and four years later in Leonard Silman’s 1956 Broadway film New Faces. In the same year she made her debut in Kind in huis.

She joined the Old Vic Theater in 1959. She appeared in Lawrence Olivier’s 1965 adaptation of Othello, as well as The Springtime of an Old Maid (1969), Travels with My Aunt (1972), The California Suite (1978), and A Love in Florence.


In the 1990s, she acted in such films as Hook (1991), Change of Habit and Richard III’s Ian McKellen (1995). He also appeared in Tea with Mussolini (1997) and Washington Square (1997). (1999).

She appeared in the 2001 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She co-starred with Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters and Daniel Radcliffe in Professor Minerva McCongal’s Harry Potter film adaptation.



In 1969 she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Best Miss Brody Years and in 1978 she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the California Pavilion. In 1978 she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for The California Suite and in 1985 she won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for A Room with a View.

Maggie Smith plays Violet Crowley in the British show Downton Abbey. She received a Golden Globe Award, two Emmy Awards and an Actors Guild Award for this performance. Two years later, she appeared in the British comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and in Dustin Hoffman’s quartet.

In 2018, she starred in the drama Downton Abbey, based on the TV series of the same name. In 2019, Smith was cast in a Netflix adaptation of the children’s novel A Boy Called Christmas and the film was released the same year.



Personal life

In 1967, she married actor, Sir Robert Stephens. Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, actors, were their children. On April 6, 1975, they divorced.

On June 23, 1975, he married Beverly Cross, a writer. Her spouse died on March 20, 1998, and they remained together.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, which she was able to overcome with the help of treatment.
